Today, Ms. Cassell came and spoke to us about about Tipi's and some traditional Aboriginal beliefs and practices surrounding tipi education. Some things that she spoke about were tipi's, the significance of each tipi pole, prayer cloths, tobacco and it's significance and importance in Aboriginal culture, kinship, Elder practices, etc. Please respond to the following....
1. What was the most interesting thing(s) you learned from her lesson?
2. Would you ever sleep in a tipi? Why or why not?
3. There are 14 tipi teachings. What stood out for you from these? Why did this really stand out for you?
If you get a chance, Ms. Cassell recommended the movie Dancing With Wolves. Check it out for some good examples of tipis.
Victoria: J'ai trouver la significance de des "poles" était vraiment interessant. Je savait pas qu'il y avait 14, et que chaque un avait un representation different. Je pense pas que je veut dormire dans un tipi, peut-être dans l'éte mais jamais dans l'hiver. Le fait qu'il y avait si beaucoup, et qu'ils sont pas toujours des choses qu'on pense de avait attraper mon attention.
ReplyDeleteI too was not aware of the significance of each pole in a tipi. It's crazy to believe that so many people lived in such a small space in our climate!
DeleteI never knew that each pole was hand made and also had 14 different teachings one for each pole. And i would say that the teachings that would stand for me were strength, respect, love, and hope.

DeleteQuand mrs. Cassell ont enseigné nous à propos des tipi ont à pensée que c'était très intéressant. Ont étais impressionnner de combien de (hide) tu devrais mettre ensemble pour faire seulement un tipi. On aime comment ça regarde, tout l'effort qui été mît dans les tipis pour les familles d'avoir un abris. Ils sont petit, et c'est intéressant et fascinant de voir comment tout un famille peuvent dormir dans un tipi. Aussi, les dessins et illustrations sûre les tipis pur l'identifier est très fascinant.
ReplyDeleteThere is certainly a lot more to a tipi than a hide being strung up on poles isn't there! I found the art work to be quite fascinating and did not realize the importance and significance of the artwork on the tipi's. When Ms. Cassell told us about the 1 tipi that was decorated on the inside rather than the outside, I found that very interesting.
DeleteAmber, Marlee et Mackenzie: 1.Il y a beacoup de valeurs avec les premiers nations et c'etait bon a savoir que chaque pole du tipi aver un significance different.2.Marlee et Kenzie ne dormerais pas dans un tipi. Elles n'aiment pas vraimant les tents et les tents sont proches au tipis parce que le temperature varie tres facilement. Amber dormerais dans un tipi parce que sa cera un nouveau experience.
ReplyDeleteSleeping in a tipi would be very challenging, especially with so many people in such a small space! It made me appreciate the space that we have as individuals today. And to think, we think it's a major inconvenience to have to share a bedroom with a sibling in our house! Can you imagine sharing a space with 8-12 family members that is so small?

ReplyDeleteThe I.B students were fortunate enough to get the chance to have Ms. Cassel come in to speak about tipi creation. Although the main focus of the presentation was to get an understanding of how a tipi is built and begin to get an understanding what fundamentals go into the making of a tipi. The I.B students agree that they took the most away from what each part of a tipi represents and the importance of each trait in the First Nations Culture.

ReplyDeleteOn a beaucoup aimé le leçon de Mme Cassell. On a appris beaucoup de nouveau choses.
1. Qu'il y a tellement de valeurs très importantes avec les Premières Nations et qu'il y a beaucoup de signifiances dans leur culture.
2. Non, parce qu'on pense que ça serait froide mais si ça serait chaud ce jour, on dormirait dans un tipi.
3. KINSHIP- parce que dans nos cultures (de Lexus et Hannah), la famille est très très TRÈS important et c'est vraiment "cool" a voir que c'est assez important en le culture des Premières Nations.
It's nice to see you make the connection and see similarities between your own beliefs and First Nations culture. We share many similar thoughts and beliefs among our various cultures.

3. le plus important que nous pense est le kinship parce que tout doivent respecter ton famille, famille est le plus important chose dans ton vie il est la pour toi alors vous devraie etre la pour il.

It is interesting that you made the connection with kinship and the importance that you see in being a close knit family/community just as the First Nations people place importance in kinship.
DeleteI agree with you when it comes to sleeping in a tipi, I'd find it very difficult to sleep in there as I'm very used to being able to control the temperature in my house with a quick adjustment of the thermostat!
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I found it interesting that each of the tipi poles stood for something different. I know I would find it very difficult to sleep in a tipi and I've grown way too comfortable with all of the luxuries I am so lucky to have in my life. Such a small space would be extremely challenging. I'm curious about why humility and obedience stood out for you? Are these both qualities that have an important part in your families?

3. Le seul qui a vraiment se démarque était Respect parce que j’ai donné le respect a tout le monde.
I agree, it would be an interesting experience to sleep in a tipi. I'm not sure how much sleep I'd get but I think it would be fun. I think I'd be worried about the wildlife that could be around you at any given time!
